A CANADIAN official said Canada is slowly regaining entry for its beef into foreign markets lost three years ago when authorities discovered the nation's first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
Soon after that first case was found in May 2003, around 60 countries banned imports of Canadian beef and cattle. In a limited number of cases, the ban extended to genetic material.
Blair Coomber, director general of international trade policy at Agriculture & Agri-food Canada, said Canadian beef has now returned to the menu in around 30 of those more than 60 countries.
