Nov. 15--Daily at 2 p.m., Decatur High School senior Christina Becerra and more than a dozen of her friends convoy to Austin High School to participate in JROTC.
Becerra is a minority among Hispanic students in extracurricular activities. When the Austin band plays, or a Decatur football team lines up, Hispanics are conspicuously absent.
Hispanic enrollment is growing 20 percent per year, but school officials say few Hispanic students participate in extracurricular activities. Soccer is the exception and is the popular activity among Hispanics in Decatur's secondary schools.
