It won't be long before a transformation of sorts takes place in Winona State Forest.
The heavy lake effect snow that forms off the coast of Lake Ontario soon will cover the thick carpet of forest huddled along Oswego and Jefferson counties, piling up snow on paths and hills, creating an idyllic wonderland for winter recreation and sports.
The forest also will become the site of one of the state's premier cross-country ski races, the 27th annual Tug Hill Tourathon, which will take place Feb. 3.
