In education the letter "E" stands for excellence. In physics "E" indicates an electromotive force. When E! Entertainment Television was born in June 1990, it wanted to combine excellence with a forceful presence in entertainment television. Today, E! is being offered to 22 million subscribers on some 1,060 U.S. cable systems. Ownership of the network is held by HBO, other Time-Warner companies and several major U.S. cable operators. Overseas, E! is seen in 90 countries, including Portugal on TVI, Mexico's Multi-Vision, South Africa's M-NET, Scandinavia's Film Net and Germany's RTL.
