Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the incoming chairman of the House Commerce Committee, sent mixed signals about how he wants the Federal Communications Commission to proceed on AT&T Inc.'s pending $79 billion acquisition of BellSouth Corp. that will merge the parent companies of No. 1 wireless operator Cingular Wireless L.L.C.
The day after the Democrats regained control of the House in midterm elections, Dingell, who commanded the commerce panel in the 1980s through the early 1990s, addressed the AT&T Inc.-BellSouth Corp. deal and other telecom matters in a wide-ranging telephone press briefing.
