From the earliest days of the Kansas Academy of Science, Kansas scientists and educators such as Francis H. Snow, Benjamin F. Mudge, John D. Parker, James H. Carruth and Joseph Savage collected significant geological and biological specimens from the Great Plains and elsewhere (Skelton, 1998). During the early years, these collections were maintained in various locations, including the offices of the State Board of Agriculture. By 1905, the collections had grown to the point that they became the foundation of a museum managed by the Academy.
