Nov. 16--In its quest to join the ranks of the state's most esteemed colleges, Christopher Newport University has made great strides with its campus improvements and student recruitment. It also should make sure its culture -- and the policies that are the official expression of that culture -- reflect the ideals of an academic community. Those ideals have to do with learning and teaching, with cultivating knowledge and understanding, with service -- and with taking a stand against ignorance, intolerance and prejudice.
