Prices rise along with business activity in August: but ISM purchasing survey sees price stability in healthcare.(ISM INDEX)(Institute for Supply Management)

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector continued to increase in August, in tandem with the overall U.S. economy, according to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) in Tempe, AZ.

The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for August was 54.5%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to July's reading of 54.7%.

Production, new orders, and employment all rose, but ISM's business survey revealed that upward pressure on supply prices continues to be a concern.

Industries reporting growth in August included electrical equipment, appliances, metal products, chemical products, computers, primary metals, food, furniture, and paper.
