Group purchasing organization Premier in Charlotte, NC, says its Medicare pay-for-performance demonstration project shows that hospitals can save money as well as lives by following treatment recommendations. Working with federal agencies, Premier tracked hospital treatments in 2004 and conducted an internal analysis.
According to Premier's analysis, if all pneumonia, cardiac bypass, heart attack (acute myocardial infarction), and hip and knee replacement patients nationwide received most or all (76%-100%) of a set of widely accepted treatment protocols in 2004, it could have resulted in nearly 5,700 fewer deaths, 8,100 fewer complications, 10,000 fewer readmissions, and ...
