Defining 'values'.(Editorial)

There has been considerable discussion recently about Australian values: what they are and what they are not. Most politicians and journalists have been quick to inform us what they consider to be 'essential' Australian values, although it has not been particularly clear what those values actually are: giving people a fair go or a hand up doesn't give much guidance. It has been suggested that people coming to Australia should commit to these, at present, unnamed and undefined values before being granted permanent or long stay visas to stay here.
