THERE are many sounds that flood through the streets of Birmingham during the morning rush hour.

But none so strange as the sound of bagpipes, as the new Bishop of Birmingham marked his inauguration with a walk through the city led by a piper.

And as they made their way from the Radisson Hotel to the Mailbox, ICC and Council House, the entourage caught the attention of scores of Brummies heading for work.

Bishop David Urquhart used the opportunity to stress his Scottish roots and emphasise his belief that the church should be part of the community.

And he offered words of comfort to those ravaged by gun crime in the city.
