Japan has developed a fondness for canned and frozen sweet corn, using it on pizzas and in ice cream. The result is that U.S. sales of sweet corn to Japan are on the upswing and expected to stay bullish because Japan's own production cannot keep up with the demand.
The United States is by far the largest foreign supplier of canned sweet corn to Japan, with an import market share of about 95 percent. Imports of canned sweet corn from all sources rose continuously from 1985 and reached a record level of 4 million cases (44,000 metric tons) in 1989, before leveling off.
