While the national debate about abortion rages on, abortions themselves have dropped significantly in America in the last few years and are now at their lowest number since the late 1970s, a new survey said Thursday.
The latest survey from the Alan Guttmacher Institute in New York, the nation's major tracker of abortion statistics, found that 1.529 million abortions were performed in America in 1992 _ down nearly 80,000 from a peak of 1.609 million in 1990 and the lowest number since 1979.
