NEW YORK _ The sounds of the ghost being buried were loud and piercing.
In the final two torturous minutes of the most significant hockey game ever played in Manhattan _ Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals _ the 18,200 New York Rangers partisans wedged into Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night held their breath.
Clang. A mean-spirited shot by Vancouver's Martin Gelinas rang off the post behind New York goalie Mike Richter, caromed off Richter's back, and slithered back toward the goal line before defenseman Kevin Lowe swept it out of harm's way. Still 3-2, Rangers.
Clang. A subsequent shot by the Canucks Nathan LaFayette smacked the post, too. Still 3-2, Rangers.
