It hardly seems possible today, but Madison deer hunter Joe Caputo can remember a time when seeing a deer was such a rare thing that it merited mention in the local newspaper and sparked gossip in village cafes.
"I grew up on a farm near Barneveld," Caputo said. "That was in the 1960s and if you even saw a deer track in a farm field, that was something people talked about."
Today, of course, deer seem about as rare in Wisconsin as dairy cows. Wisconsin's deer herd has grown from about 370,000 animals in 1960 to nearly 1.7 million deer today. It's just slightly smaller than the record high ...
