Nov. 18--CHEYENNE -- Liz Flaherty set the record straight Friday for Earth science students at Johnson Junior High.

Flying squirrels don't really fly, she told the eighth-graders. "The name is kind of misleading."

But what they do to get from one place to another is nothing short of amazing. The squirrels are equipped with a membrane that stretches from their wrist to their ankles.

When they extend their arms and legs, the animals glide or "fly" incredibly long distances, she said. They sometimes glide for as far as 100 feet at a time.

"It's the same principle as a hang glider," she said.
