Regulators tread warily in debate over genetic testing. (National Association of Insurance Commissioners working group)

A National Association of Insurance Commissioners working group is cautiously examining the issue of whether it is ethical for health and life insurers to conduct genetic testing. Though the practice has not yet started, the American Council of Life Insurance reports that 18 state bills to regulate genetic testing have been introduced to date. A 1993 Ohio law will not allow health insurers to use genetic testing until at least 2004 because of inadequate technology and high expense.
