Editor--I read with interest the letter describing a lady who experienced pain in the contralateral elbow when receiving acupuncture treatment for 'golfer's elbow'. (1) It reminded me of an article I read regarding case reports of treating phantom limb pain in amputees, (2) using acupuncture in the mirror image of the painful points in the intact limb. I have since several times applied this principle to my practice. Anecdotally, I have treated myself for pain due to a sprained ankle by needling the mirror image of the painful points in the normal ankle.
