Nov. 19--"Kids today."
That may be what several early settlers of Milford said when told their sons had burned down a Paugussett fort in 1671. It was vandalism, a prank that got out of hand, historians say, but the colonists' response tells us a lot.
"The boys were brought to court in New Haven and they were fined 10 pounds," said Richard Platt, Milford's municipal historian and a descendent of some of the vandals. It may have been the first time that native Americans sought redress in an English court established by colonists, and won their claim, local historians said.
