Nov. 19--BONIFAY -- Wild turkeys weren't always so revered in Holmes County -- they were nowhere to be found.
But eight years after the start of an effort to repopulate the birds, their re-emergence is in full flight, as is a community intent on protecting their growing numbers.
And while hunters hankering for a turkey in most of Northwest Florida get four days to try their luck beginning on Thanksgiving Day, Holmes County remains closed until March. And even then, the turkey hunting season is limited to just a few days.
You won't hear complaints from folks in Holmes County, though.
