Signing on to King County's Web site on Friday, a visitor was greeted with the "Pet of the Week," featuring a cat and directing people, "Visit our animal shelter to adopt a cat or dog." Judging by an advisory committee's report, a Web listing is as good as it gets in a county system that horribly neglects lost, abandoned and abused animals.
The committee unanimously found the county's two shelters are in a "deplorable state." The committee said animals in the shelters "suffer from high rates of disease, improper housing, inadequate exercise and social contact, a lack of basic comforts and high levels of stress."
