One of the greatest obstacles to discussing recent advances in microwave technology is getting the acronyms right -- particularly when it comes to the DOD's biggest chip initiative. Is it "MIMIC" or "MMIC"? Few people, it seems, can keep the two straight. Therefore, we often see MIMIC mimicking MMIC, and vice versa.
Thus, allow me to point out that "MMIC" stands for "monolithic microwave integrated circuits," while "MIMIC" is not an acronym at all, but the name Egbert C. (Sunny) Maynard, then undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, gave the DOD microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits program. The seven-year initiative that started in 1986 ...
