EDITORIAL: 'Academic freedom' without intrusive law governing state's higher education.(Editorial)

Nov. 21--The Pennsylvania House Select Committee on Academic Freedom in Higher Education was poorly and ironically named. It held several hearings regarding House Resolution 177, known as the "Academic Freedom Bill." But, had the bill become law, it would have established a committee to oversee hiring, firing, curriculum content and political affiliations of faculty members at colleges and universities that receive state funding. That hardly fits our definition of "academic freedom." The odious bill would have charged the committee with reviewing student complaints about professors.
