JABALPUR, India -- Church leaders say a proposal of the Madhya Pradesh state government to subsidize pilgrimage expenses for all religious groups except Christians is "a political gimmick" aimed at wooing the electorate in favor of the ruling party.
The church is not looking for "any freebie," said Archbishop Pascal Topno of Bhopal, capital of this central Indian state. He said what the church wants is the government's guarantee that Christians' constitutional and human rights won't be violated.
