Back in 1979, Arlington Heights Village President Arlene Mulder was on maternity leave with plans to return to teaching when she received a phone call that changed her life.

It was from Kathryn "Katy" Graham, who wanted Mulder to fill a vacant seat on the Arlington Heights Park District board. Graham had already been on the park district board for six years.

Mulder agreed.

"The only reason I'm in office is because of Katy Graham," said Mulder, who has been the village president since 1993. "If she never made that call, I'd never have gotten started in public service."
