AT THEIR summit in Corfu on June 24th and 25th, the heads of government of the European Union (EU) will try to choose Jacques Delors's successor. Provided that the European Parliament approves their choice, the next president of the commission will start a five-year term next January. Mr Delors has turned the job into one that matters. The president can set the Union's agenda--the single market and monetary union were two of Mr Delors's ideas--although commission proposals do not become law unless the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament approve them.
