USING the organisational skills of the local civil service and the muscle of the army, it was easy for the Hutu militiamen to herd 5,000 members of the minority Tutsi tribe, and some Hutu members of opposition parties, into the church of St Vincent--and then to kill them all.
The scene in Nyamata, a town 80 kilometres (50 miles) south-east of the capital, Kigali, was repeated throughout Rwanda. This was no spontaneous explosion of tribal violence, but a calculated attempt to get rid of an entire people--and a skilled one.
