After chasing Coues deer in the Arizona desert, I now know why these animals are so tough to hunt.
I'm a great believer in glassing. I'd never go on a hunt without binoculars, and when I'm afield, they are almost in constant use. But this was insane. In fact, I was sure that my guide Dave Penrod was asleep. He had been looking through his binoculars for a solid half-hour and had hardly moved an inch the last 10 minutes. Lying prone on a big flat rock, elbows propping up his chin, his tripod-mounted binoculars were aimed at a mountain a half-mile away.
"Are you alive?' I whispered. "You can't make deer out of rocks, you know."
