PHILADELPHIA -- When the Phillies began preparing for the 2007 season at spring training in Clearwater, Fla., Kyle Kendrick wasn't there. Nor was he on their 40-man roster.

The former Mount Vernon High School football, basketball and baseball star and Washington State football recruit was in Double-A Reading with no realistic chance of being called up.

Kendrick wasn't pitching poorly. He had a 4-7 record with a 3.21 ERA.

Even when the Phillies summoned Kendrick to make one start on June 13, there was no way he could have expected the rest of the season to unfold like it did.
