Day care has become essential to many families. In 1988, over 60% of children under 5 years old were cared for outside the home. Over 30% of day care is provided by non-residential facilities.
Parents worry about the safety of their children while they are at day care. A recent survey of day care center directors found that non-residential day care centers are, on the whole, very safe. The centers surveyed had, in total, 138,404 children in their programs. During a two month span, 556 children received injuries requiring medical attention. That's 1.5 injuries per 100,000 child hours in day care.
