The Air Force is still waiting for a final analysis, but military and industry officials have called a test flight of a B-52 Stratofortress from Edwards Air Force Base using synthetic fuel a success.
Maj. Gen. Curtis Bedke said the flight test involved running two of the bomber's eight jet-engines on a 50-50 blend of traditional JP-8 jet fuel and a Fischer-Tropsch fuel made from natural gas. The other six engines, the general said, ran on JP-8.
Bedke said the next step will be to use the alternative fuel on an eight-engine test. Though no time table was set, the general said that could happen in a few months.
