When I first began as a fishing/boating editor more than 12 years ago, the average tournament bass boat was 18 to 19 feet in length with an average of 150 horsepower on the transom. Then B.A.S.S. came west, where the pros, who had become accustomed to fishing out of bigger boats with more horsepower, "explained" a thing or two to the giant tournament organization. B.A.S.S. wisely lifted the horsepower restriction, and from there, tournament-style boats have gotten longer and horsepower has become unlimited.
