There was a healthful porousness about "In Out of the Cold," the inaugural show at the Center for the Arts in San Francisco's new Yerba Buena Gardens [see "Front Page," Oct. '93). This salutary effect followed partly from the ample breathing spaces of Fumihiko Maki's building, empathetic to local drifts of light and scale, and partly from the way the presentation of the show itself, which was about duress and empathy on a global scale, by turns acceded to and smartly modified the givens of Maki's largesse.
