The sanctuary at the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial, a former church now used mainly for performances, is pungent with history. Its long, narrow and slightly decayed brick interior was modeled on several Romanesque originals, and it is peopled with pre-renaissance statuary, some of it collected by Philadelphia philanthropist Samuel Fleisher. Alan Greenberg's installation Of Equal Weight, part of the Fleisher's "Challenge" exhibition program, was the first large-scale site work to inhabit this space. The piece could be read as a gloss on the religious metaphors embedded in traditional church architecture.
