Many Latin Americans cling to the Bolivarian-style notion of regional gas market integration, a scenario in which vast volumes of Bolivian, Venezuelan and perhaps Peruvian gas would be sold at "fair" but relatively low prices to fuel economic growth everywhere from Chile and Argentina north to Mexico. And none more so than leading leftist President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. The rub is that the resource nationalism that Chavez and allies such as Bolivian President Evo Morales espouse is scaring off many of the consuming country governments that theoretically stand to benefit from such schemes.
