Forging family's f lood of duds put the banks in peril; Gang printed millions in fake [pounds sterling]20 notes at an 85-year-old granny's flat.

A GANG of sophisticated forgers, including three generations of the same family, produced so many fake [pounds sterling]20 notes the whole banking system was under threat, a court heard yesterday.

Part of the printing was done in sheltered housing where the 85-year-old great grandmother of one of the gang lived.

A stash of [pounds sterling]22,000 of forged notes, wrapped in plastic, was on top of her kitchen cupboard, waiting to be distributed.

The 'family business' produced two-thirds of all the forged notes recovered by the Bank of England in 2005.

They had a face value of more than [pounds sterling]14million.
