OTTAWA -- Already deep in battle with environmentalists in Alberta, the Canadian oil and gas industry now finds it faces tough new exploration restrictions in neighboring British Columbia.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), which represents 190 energy companies, has warned the British Columbia government that there would be "catastrophic" results if the government stands by its new regulations and insists that oil and gas companies first consult environmental activists before being given permission to drill.
