No refuge for abused women.(NEWS)

ALMOST 3,000 victims of domestic abuse were refused entry to emergency shelters last year because of a shortage of space.

Women who were living in fear of their lives were turned away because existing shelters are bulging at the seams with victims and their children.

The shocking figures have been revealed a day after support group Women's Aid protested outside Leinster House to remember the 125 women who have been killed since 1996, half of them by their intimate partners.

The statistics show that all 18 shelters around Ireland for victims of domestic violence are suffering from chronic over-crowding.
