Nov. 26--If not for the school bus driver, I would have felt certain the cyclist in tattered clothes was a plant. A decoy. Riding a rattletrap of a bike, he pulls up next to the Daytona Beach police chief, who also is on a bike, showing a smile without many teeth.
"It's finally turning into a good town," he observes. Mike Chitwood returns the smile, thanks him, and watches the guy ride off. A few minutes earlier, a school bus driver had leaned out her window and yelled at Chitwood, "We love you! We love you!" So after the cyclist encounter, I turn to Chitwood and ask, "Come on.
