Brown expects surveillance cameras in some high-crime areas by next fall.

Nov. 22--Surveillance cameras probably will be installed at crime hot spots throughout the city by early next fall, Mayor Byron W. Brown predicted Tuesday.

Brown said he plans to include money in next year's budget for a camera network intended to deter crime in neighborhoods and commercial strips. Last week, police officials had traveled to Chicago to see how the nation's third-largest city has tapped technology in its anti-crime efforts.

"As we continue to focus on quality of life issues, it's clear surveillance cameras can be important tools in reducing crime," Brown said, adding that city officials were impressed with Chicago's system.
