Q. What is in a plant seed that makes it grow? _ Matthew Montgomery.
A. Seeds usually need a little time before they can sprout. Moisture and heat are the signals for the seed to sprout, or germinate. The material inside the seed includes the genetic coding to produce a new plant, plus just enough food to get the plant started. The first root, which is called the radicle, goes straight down, and not long after a shoOt goes straight up. The plant needs to get a leaf out in the sunlight pretty fast so it can start to make food, which it does using photosynthesis.
