PBS special serves up a huge helping of Chicago music.(Suburban Living)(TV & Radio)

It's impossible to cover the breadth and depth of Chicago music in a mere hour. Yet the new special "American Roots Music: Chicago" makes a game try of it at 9 p.m. today on WTTW Channel 11.

It's not perfect by any means, and it commits a couple of major gaffes of omission. But as a quick overview it makes for pleasant viewing, and even a critical viewer has to admit that as it examines Chicago's contributions to jazz, blues, folk, country, gospel and, of course, polka it makes an admirable attempt to squeeze in as much as possible.

Harold Ramis narrates from a script he likely did not write. Ramis would no doubt have avoided grammatical errors ...
