QuickTime VR Is Virtual Reality Without All TheProhibitively Expensive Hardware

Apple Computer Inc. has unveiled its new "every man's" virtual reality technology that lets computer users take realistic, 360-degree "tours" of places and buildings using a PC equipped with a CD-ROM drive.

The new QuickTime VR technology was demonstrated at the Digital World Exposition in Los Angeles earlier this month. Simon & Schuster Interactive is expected to license the technology for its "Star Trek" CD-ROM title, which will be launched this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago.
