Nov. 27--After two days of occasional thought and about 20 minutes of introspection, I have decided to take a new approach to the holiday season.
I'm going to look at it as Lent.
It will be a time of giving up, not gobbling up, and of penitence, not purchasing.
Traditionally, Lent is the Christian observance that runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter and is marked by sacrifice and fasting.
In the modern world, many use it to concentrate on things they believe they should already be doing -- prayer, worship, good works and avoiding common vices like gossip, harsh language and anger.
