It was widely billed as a development tour, the trip that would uncover talent for the Springboks' future. Coach Jake White made great play of that fact, insisting that the SA Rugby Board and respected South African rugby men like Nick Mallett and Naas Botha had all signed up to the project.
But it didn't quite work out that way. If it was a true development tour, why was it we never saw players who could have shown their potential development for the future - like Chilliboy Ralepelle, J P Pietersen, Ruan Pienaar and Gary Botha?
We only saw 40 minutes of Hilton Lobberts, too.
