Nov. 29--Power and water rates in Rochester likely will head north in 2007 because of higher costs. Rochester Public Utilities is proposing an 8 percent boost in electricity rates and a 5 percent hike in water rates. Both would take effect Jan. 1, if they clear a second look by the RPU board and a final decision by the city council.
The city-owned utility figures the average increase for a residential customer at $5.52 a month, or $66.24 a year. Water charges would spurt 56 cents a month, or $6.72 a year. The power rate surge is directly related to RPU's cost of obtaining electricity from its supplier, Southern Minnesota ...
