Article: Everyman's intellectual: remembering Irving Howe. (writer)

WHILE MOST PEOPLE KNEW IRVING HOWE AS A critic, academic, and writer, I was privileged to know him as a collaborator and friend. Meeting with Irving on a regular basis over a period of several years, I grew to know and appreciate his personal side. I remember Irving at his most poignant when he was living in a furnished room at the Hotel des Artistes on West 66th Street in Manhattan. He was between marriages and, from the look on his face when he opened the door, having a hard time readjusting to bachelorhood.
