Though there hasn't been a widespread scare about a "killer" virus in the computer industry for a while, computer viruses are still around, and there are more of them.
Ranging from more benign ones that just put a message on your screen or fill your disk with junk files to those that delete key files or damage the file allocation table and more, viruses now number well above the 2000 mark, and new ones continue to appear.
