Ben Chavis, head of the N.A.A.C.P., convened a black summit in Baltimore beginning June 12 and had the temerity to invite Louis Farrakhan. The white folk went nuts.
How dare they not invite white people! How dare they invite Farrakhan! How dare Cornel West attend a function with Farrakhan when he had pledged himself against racism and anti-Semitism! How dare they disgrace the time-honored coalition of blacks and Jews! Etc., etc. These last are from a standing column Richard Cohen of The Washington Post publishes every couple of years, but similar commentary flowed from the TV and radio.
