Few miners, or anyone else, is still alive 99 years after the worst mining disaster in American history shook this corner of the world. Wednesday, Dec. 6, the day of that 1907 tragedy miles beneath the nearby Marion County community of Monongah, also marks the first celebration of a new state holiday. Miner's Day, adopted by the Legislature in mid-February following two mining disasters in January, was inspired by a grassroots petition that went online Jan. 16.
